Have you ever wondered how movies are made? In an era of smartphones that can record video, it’s easy to forget that only in the last decade did Hollywood leave film recordings behind. Even with digital technology at our fingertips, many movies are made on film each year, a technical process that isn’t always easy to understand. A new YouTube channel titled What Is… has created two short videos explaining the components of motion picture film and how it renders imagery. Well illustrated and narrated, “What Is: Film” covers various formats including Super 8, 35mm, IMAX, and how they are used in modern filmmaking. As a follow up, they have also made a bonus film “Why Are Film Negatives Backward?”
