In 2001, San Francisco-based photographer Ray Potes began publishing Hamburger Eyes, a stapled zine jam-packed with black-and-white photographs. Inspired by the punk culture and skateboarding zines he grew up with, Potes made Hamburger Eyes a place dedicated to presenting moments of everyday life. By word of mouth, hand-distribution, and the help of Bay Area independent bookstores, the zine became an underground sensation that now has an international reputation for strange and genuine photography. In this half-hour documentary directed by Aaron Rose of Hat & Beard Films, Potes as well as photographers who contribute to and are influenced by the beloved urban zine speak about the zine that influenced a generation of photographers.
