Pain Tolerance from Josh Dickinson’s series Medical Studies is part documentary and part surveillance film. For one year the photographer participated in an assortment of medical studies while documenting the experience in both still and video. Pain Tolerance used two cameras recording simultaneously from two different angles. One recorded the test event—his hand submerged in ice water—the other recorded only his facial expressions. Filmed at close proximity and without any background for context, the viewer has no choice but to focus exclusively on the icy water and the increasing pain on the subject’s face. Dickinson simultaneously places us in his shoes and the shoes of the person conducting the experiment. The clever use of angles and real-time footage makes us feel his pain and share his relief when the test is over.
