Crowd funding is becoming increasingly popular among creatives. With more sites springing up and more artists asking for funds, Don’t Take Pictures spotlights projects that benefit the arts community.

This month’s crowd funding spotlight presents a new product for photographers.

New55 FILM

Bob Crowley has developed a new type of instant peel-apart film for 4x5 cameras. The film produces both a high quality positive and negative image. While it is based on the single-shot Polaroid type 55, the tonal range has been improved. It will keep analog photography alive in a time when darkrooms are rapidly disappearing.

Crowley is using the Kickstarter campaign as a means to encourage artists to come together to fund a creative material, rather than as a pre-sales initiative. This new film, by allowing artists to explore a new medium and way of seeing, will influence the photographic community as a whole.

The $400,000 goal is steep, but it is also necessary to continue the research and development beyond the existing handmade prototypes and acquire the machinery and associated costs needed for large-scale production.
