In Motion: The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography

Elsa Dorfman is a legend in portrait photography. Acclaimed filmmaker Errol Morris explores Dorfman’s life as an artist and her transition from making Hasselblad photographs of literary giants in Harvard Square to the 20 x 24 Polaroid portraits that became her legacy. In the film, Dorfman takes Errol Morris on a tour of her archive, pulling out portraits and sharing the stories behind them while offering insights into her own life. It is revealed that Dorfman made two photographs during each portrait session, but her subjects only purchased one. The remaining portraits—the B-sides—offer a glimpse into the mind of the woman who made a name for herself through the faces of others.
