Crowd funding is becoming increasingly popular among creatives. With more sites sprinting up and more artists asking for funds, Don’t Take Pictures spotlights projects that benefit the arts community.
This month’s crowd funding roundup presents a film on legendary photographer Garry Winogrand.
Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable
“What does photography do better than anything else? Well, it describes. To use it for anything else is rather foolish.” States the late Garry Winogrand in a voiceover accompanying a slideshow of his photographs. One of the most important and influential photographers of his generation, Winogrand photographed American life from the late 1950s until the 1980s. At the time of his unexpected death in 1984, he left behind over 10,000 of rolls of undeveloped film. Now, more than 30 years after his death, filmmaker Sasha Waters Freyer has created the first cinematic survey of Winogrand’s photographic legacy. Endorsed by Winogrand’s gallery and estate, Freyer’s film Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable centers on images made by Winogrand from the iconic to the undiscovered. Nearly a million photographs, hours of home movies, and newly discovered audio tapes are incorporated into the production to give life to his never-before-seen photographs, and present a portrait of the man behind the shutter.
Freyer is looking to raise $50,000 to complete the film, with just two interviews to film, obtain rights for music and archival materials, and complete the sound mix. January 2018 is the expected premiere date, and the film will be distributed in North America by Submarine in New York City. International sales and distribution will be handled by Wide House.
