Crowd funding is becoming increasingly popular among creative. With more sites springing up and more artists asking for funds, Don’t Take Pictures spotlights projects that benefit the arts community.
The month’s crowd funding roundup presents a new instant camera.
The Lomo’Instant Automat Camera
The Lomography brand has become synonymous with the experimental photography aesthetic where photographs are perfectly imperfect. Five of their cameras have been funded through Kickstarter and their newest campaign is seeking funding for the Lomo’Instant Automat. This retro-styled instant camera is available in a variety of colors and claims to be the most advanced automatic instant camera yet—its shutter speed, aperture and flash output automatically adjustable for any lighting situation.
In a time when everyone with a smartphone has a point-and-shoot camera with filters on hand, why produce a point-and-shoot film camera? Using Fujifilm Instax Mini film, the appeal lies in the one-of-a-kind instant prints, and, unlike the sharpness of the smartphone, the Lomo’Instant Automat embraces the imperfections that instant film users have come to love.
The company markets the camera as a “camera for everyone” due to its easy-to-use automatic features, but for photographers seeking more creative freedom, the Lomo’Instant Automat features bulb mode for control over exposure times up to 30 seconds, exposure compensation, multiple exposures mode, and a remote control lens cap that makes self-portraiture possible. In addition to the default lens, the camera also accommodates wide-angle, fisheye, and close-up lenses that are included in the combo package.
The project has already exceeding its $100,000 fundraising goal, which is no surprise given the company’s history of successful crowdfunding and enticing rewards. Pre-orders are the main goal and early backers receive discounted cameras, accessories, and film.
