For years, Don’t Take Pictures has been bringing you book reviews and recommendations of titles on photography. We are pleased to announce that we are now working with Bookshop so that your book purchases support small presses and independent booksellers.
Bookshop is a new type on online retailer and was conceived of as an alternative to Amazon.com. Amazon squeezes publishers, including small presses, making it hard for them to earn enough money through sales to stay in business. Bookshop believes that people will see the value in choosing to buy books from a company that gives back to small publishers and booksellers. As a B-corporation, it pledges 75% of its profit margin to the publisher or bookstore from which it sources its materials.
Bookshop works like any other online store. The real difference is in Bookshop’s profit-sharing pool. Ten percent of all Bookshop profits are divided among independent bookstores every six months. Bookshop also helps customers discover new books by allowing stores to curate topical collections and thoughtful staff picks.
Additionally, Bookshop has an affiliate program for brick-and-mortar bookstores, who receive a 25% commission on each sale, much higher than Amazon’s 4.5%. This program allows independent bookstores to create an online bookselling presence without the burden and expense of building and managing a complex ecommerce site.
As a Bookshop affiliate, independent media outlets like Don’t Take Pictures are able to receive referral fees through our online shop featuring titles we have reviewed and recommended. For media companies (like us), Bookshop offers a place to showcase titles that have reviewed and earn 10% commission.
We are proud to be an affiliate of Bookshop and look forward to sharing many more great titles with the Don’t Take Pictures community. View our recommended reading here.
