2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the legal right to vote. In celebration, PDNB Gallery in Dallas presents an exhibition of women photographers who the gallery has shown over its 25-year history. Titled Women We Have Known, the exhibit is presented as an online show that can be viewed in the gallery by appointment only.

Included among the 27 artists on view are pioneers such as Grete Stern, Ruth Orkin, Lisette Model, and contemporary photographers such as Marta Maria Perez Bravo, Patty Carroll, Meg Griffiths, Jeanine Michna-Bales, and Flor Garduño. The exhibition spans the last 100 years of photographic history, providing a fascinating look at how the medium has shifted over time both in technical advancements and conceptual ideas. The works here are not presented narrowly as “women’s work,” a trap that ensnares too many women-focused exhibitions. The images include landscapes, abstractions, street photography, and a significant portion of the show includes works made in Latin America. In Women We Have Known, PDNB Gallery has curated an exhibition that celebrates women photographers without attempting to define what it means to be a woman.
