In Motion: 1997: Birth of the Camera Phone
On June 11, 1997, mathematician and technology innovator Philippe Kahn welcomed his daughter Sophie into the world. Wanting to share a photo of his minutes-old baby girl with his family and friends, Kahn was inspired to create the first camera phone. Jonathan Green directs a Conscious Minds film about the event that paved the way for instant, on-location photo-sharing, the iPhone, and Instagram. While in the hospital with his wife in labor, Kahn jerry-rigged a mobile phone with an early digital camera to send photos in real time to his server at home (pre WiFi era) and then via email to his contacts list. The congratulatory response was immediate and overwhelming, for both Sophie’s arrival and her picture. In 2016, Time Magazine included Kahn’s first camera phone photo of baby Sophie in their list of the 100 most influential photos of all time.
