In Motion: Bob Shimmin's Tintype Process
From his gorgeous Michigan studio, tintypist Bob Shimmin gives a brief history of the wet plate collodion process and discusses his own work as a photographer. The film was produced as part of the Kalamazoo Valley Museum’s exhibition Remember Me: Civil War Portraits so it is fitting that Shimmin explains how his love of the historical process stems from his childhood fascination with the Civil War. In the second video, Shimmin demonstrates the making of a tintype, a photographic object that he describes as “…looking at something that’s of today, but not necessarily of today.”
