Crowdfunding is becoming increasingly popular among creatives. With more sites springing up and more artists asking for funds, Don’t Take Pictures spotlights projects that benefit the arts community.

This month’s crowdfunding roundup presents a new organization’s first steps towards promoting traditional photography.

Making Contact: An Emulsion-based Photography Exhibit

Frustrated with the disappearance of darkroom resources, two Philadelphia area photographers formed The Halide Project, an organization dedicated to fostering the traditional and alternative photographic arts. The organization has long-term plans for a community darkroom, workshops, and an artist residency, but its first event is a four-person exhibition. To drum up enthusiasm for their vision and plans, Halide founders Dale Rio and Alex Orgera have devised an exhibition of artists working in chromogenic, silver gelatin, and alternative processes. The show is scheduled for December 2015 at the Crane Arts building in Philadelphia. Additionally, free educational events including a lectures and demonstrations will be held by the exhibiting artists. The Halide Foundation is currently seeking a modest amount of $3,750 to cover expenses related to the exhibition.
