Crowd Funding Roundup: The Pop-Up Pinhole Company
Crowd funding is becoming increasingly popular among creatives. With more sites springing up and more artists asking for funds, Don’t Take Pictures spotlights projects that benefit the arts community.
This month’s crowd funding roundup presents a simple DIY pinhole camera for the masses.
VIDDY Pop-up Pinhole Camera
The costs associated with photography can make it prohibitive for many to become involved in the medium. Enter The Pop-Up Pinhole Company and their newest prototype: VIDDY. VIDDY is a screen-printed and die-cut pinhole camera kit that uses both medium format and 35mm film. Easily assembled in about 30 minutes without glue or scissors, this camera allows anyone to learn the basics of photography with a clever, affordable, hands-on approach. The Pop-Up Pinhole Company has been bringing their cameras to school campuses and have used them to teach a wide-range of subjects outside of the arts including science, math, history, and engineering.
For photography newcomers or those looking for assistance with how pinhole cameras read light, each VIDDY kit comes with a basic exposure guide and The Pop-Up Pinhole app. The app helps determine exposure time based on film speed and conditions. Currently, VIDDY is only produced in the UK, but with enough US backers, they will be able to expand their production to the States.
