The Leaving is a video-performance piece by Clare Benson. Waist-deep in a cold-looking river, Benson slowly and carefully breaks apart her wings made of twigs. The strangeness of this action is juxtaposed with the stiff, no-frills filming method. The camera merely remains stationary, recording the event as it unfolds. She never engages with the camera and we sit and watch, unable to ask questions, unable to assist. The pace of the film is slow and meditative. With no soundtrack apart from the ambient noise, we view this film in a performance art way rather than as a cinematic experience. Screened at her MFA thesis exhibition, Benson’s video fits with her still photographs that explore her relationship with nature and personal history.
